Journalist work experience with AIMS (African Institute for Mathematical Sciences)
Project: Alumni Stories
The scope of the project is to collect the stories and experiences of alumni who have studied at the AIMS postgraduate centres across Africa. By doing interviews and profile we tried to show how their academic and professional career has developed through their study with AIMS.
Responsibilities:
- To coordinate and project manage the Alumni Stories project
- To arrange and conduct interviews with Alumni in the UK
- To compile Questionnaire guideline around key topics for interview
- To collate and write up stories from AIMS alumni based in the UK
- These stories are collected by interviewing the alumni and trying to convey their personal and professional development.
- To write up and publish compelling stories for use in AIMS network-wide communications materials
The African Institute for Mathematical Sciences is a pan-African network of centres of excellence for postgraduate training, research and outreach in mathematical sciences. The AIMS mission is to enable Africa's brightest students to flourish as independent thinkers and innovators capable of propelling Africa's future scientific, educational and economical self-sufficiency.

Radio Broadcaster with The News Agents on Resonance FM
My main responsibilities included:
- Conducting radio interviews with personalities from the world of culture
- Curating radio program on a specific subject (https://soundcloud.com/matteobesanaaudioportfoli/the-news-agents-28-2-2015-the-housing-crisis)
- Acting as anchor or co-host of the programme
Oct. 2013 – Mar. 2014
Print Output Editor and News Reporter at Arts London News
As a news reporter my main responsibilities included:
- Being assigned to report from a specific beat.
- Pitch stories that I would later research and write, creating content that had to be suited to print, Internet, audio and video podcast.
For three months I was appointed Print Output Editor of the weekly, printed edition of Arts London News, my main responsibilities included:
- Ensured that all content was presented to the highest possible standard.
- Responsibility for the front page and the cover story,
- Reading all final proofs, order changes and sign off pages,
- Identifying any legal or ethical problems at all stages of production and
- Writing the weekly leader column.
Jan. – Feb. 2014 Data Journalist Work Experience at Request Initiative, London
During my work experience placement I:
- Received training in FOI and worked on a computer assisted investigative journalism project.
- I was responsible for tagging, categorising and assessing the value of information gathered from a range of sources, including speeches, cuttings, interview transcripts and company information.

Editor at Butcher’s Hook Magazine London
My main responsibilities included:
- Organising the work of a team of writer,
- Writing articles and leaders columns
- Deciding which layout to use for the magazine
- Organising promotional events to publicise the magazine
Butcher’s Hook was a magazine developed in collaboration with other trainee journalists. Our aim was to offer a magazine with a more serious approach than might normally be expected from a student-led publication and to offer a fresh perspective for our readership to relate to.
